DEA Registration Renewal

A DEA registration for practitioners is generally valid for three years, and renewing it on time keeps your ability to prescribe controlled substances uninterrupted.

Timing

The DEA typically sends a renewal reminder to the registered address before the expiration date, and renewal is done online through the DEA Diversion Control Division. Do not rely on the reminder, because it goes to the address on file. Put the expiration date in your tracker and renew well ahead of it.

If it lapses

The DEA has allowed a short period after expiration in which a registration can still be renewed, but the registration is not valid for handling controlled substances during that time, and after the period a new application is needed. Confirm the current grace rules with the DEA, because the details have changed over time.

State registrations come first

A DEA registration depends on state authority to handle controlled substances in the state of the registered address. If your state also requires its own controlled substance registration, see the state registration guide.

MATE Act attestation

The renewal form asks you to confirm that you have completed the one-time 8-hour training or that you are exempt. See the MATE Act guide.

Moving or practicing in another state

A DEA registration is tied to an address and a state. If you practice in more than one state, you generally need a registration for each state where you prescribe, so confirm this with the DEA.

Limits of this guide
