Preparing for a Medical Board CME Audit
A CME audit is routine for the board and can be stressful for the clinician, but it is usually a request for proof you already hold.
What happens
Some boards select a sample of licensees at random or after a renewal and ask for proof of the hours attested. The notice states what to send and by when.
How to respond
- Read the notice fully and note the deadline.
- Gather certificates covering the whole cycle requested.
- If something is missing, ask the provider for a duplicate before the deadline.
- Send copies, never the only original, and keep proof of delivery.
If you are short
Contact the board promptly and honestly. Some boards allow a corrective period, but the rules and consequences differ, so we cannot generalize here.
Prevent it next cycle
Record each course as you finish it. See the documentation guide.
Limits of this guide
Rules and fees change, and this guide is general information, so confirm the details with the relevant board or agency before you act.
